Lecturer at EAISI Academy

Dr. ir. Bram Cappers

"There鈥檚 nothing more exciting than inventing a new piece of fundamental technology and turning it into a scalable, industrial platform. And a lot of what that takes simply isn鈥檛 covered in textbooks."

Dr. ir. Bram Cappers enjoys sharing these experiences with students. Teaching forces him to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. It keeps him sharp, and it gives students the opportunity to understand how academic techniques can be applied in everyday work 鈥 and where the pitfalls lie. Win鈥搘in.

  • Position: Lecturer

Expertise

Over the past six years, Bram has tested and applied his techniques as an entrepreneur across various domains, including healthcare, finance, security, and energy. While these domains differ greatly, the challenges surrounding data are surprisingly similar. He has learned that it鈥檚 crucial to truly understand the domain and to approach problems from multiple perspectives to apply general techniques effectively.

Bram is especially focused on real-world applications. Too many academic techniques are gathering dust, while the industry urgently needs innovation. He views it as his mission to apply these techniques in entirely new contexts and translate them into practical solutions.

Biography

Bram is a part-time lecturer in Visual Analytics at the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at 果冻传媒. After earning his MSc in Computer Science (cum laude), he obtained his PhD in Visual Analytics and Anomaly Detection, developing systems to detect advanced computer viruses in critical infrastructures, including nuclear facilities, the VoIP telecom industry, and defense systems.

Bram has received multiple awards in the fields of real-time data analysis, entrepreneurship, and data science. He went on to found two companies鈥 and 鈥攖o make cutting-edge techniques accessible to the industry.

Outside of his professional life, Bram prefers analog activities: he enjoys diving, climbing, and board games. He also loves tinkering with electronics and traveling (preferably by train or carpooling).

Courses and projects

You can encounter Dr. ir. Bram Cappers during the following EAISI Academy courses and projects:

Applications program: Anomaly Detection and Visual Analytics
In this course, Bram introduces the core techniques for detecting anomalies and explores the primary challenges associated with them. In the second part of the course, participants put their knowledge into practice by applying the theory to a real-world case. That鈥檚 when you discover that, while the techniques themselves may not be rocket science, applying them to your challenge is no easy task.

鈥淔inding anomalies is not difficult. The challenge is finding the ones that matter.鈥
