鈥淎 valuable investment in knowledge about a technology that will increasingly shape our society.鈥

Arthur van der Poel

Although I did not take the Real-World Data Science & AI course to set up AI projects myself, as a retired executive with a long career in the high-tech sector, I wanted to gain a better understanding of what artificial intelligence is and how it is evolving. My years of experience at organizations such as Philips, ASML, Signify, and BDR Thermea have taught me the importance of understanding new technologies, particularly from a management perspective.

What did this two-day introductory course bring you?

This 2-day course showed me that data science & AI encompass a wide range of applications. I learned that AI is applied in areas such as:

  • Advanced robotics, like self-driving cars and soccer robots;
  • Consultancy applications, including models that support medical, legal, and financial experts;
  • Text applications such as ChatGPT, which can generate readable summaries from large amounts of data;
  • Image processing, enabling highly advanced image recognition and analysis.

The course provided a good overview of both the opportunities and risks associated with these applications. Despite the program lasting only two days (plus some preparatory work), it gave me enough insights to feel reasonably familiar with this important field鈥攁 valuable outcome.

Do you have any advice for future participants?

I would recommend this introductory course not only to future professionals but also to decision-makers within large organizations (companies, educational institutions, and government agencies), where decisions need to be made about implementing these technologies and where an understanding of both opportunities and risks is essential. The course assumes a basic familiarity with mathematical topics, such as statistics.
