Customized KPIs, an innovative method for KPI definition
Montijn van de Ven developed a method to define KPIs that fit unique business models, which helps organizations innovate and make better decisions.

Montijn van de Ven of the Information Systems group received his doctorate 29 November for his PhD research on a practical method for defining Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). This research provides organizations and networks with the tools to choose KPIs that perfectly fit their unique business models.
Defining KPIs, a challenge
In a constantly changing world, organizations must continue to adapt and innovate to remain competitive. KPIs are essential to measure success, achieve goals and deliver value to customers. However, choosing the right KPIs can be challenging, especially in complex and collaborative networks, where multiple organizations with different interests work together.
KPI Catalog
Montijn van de Ven has developed a KPI catalog that organizes KPIs based on business model dimensions. This makes it easier for organizations to choose the most relevant indicators. He has also designed a method and prototype software tool that provides a systematic approach to identifying and operationalizing KPIs. These tools help organizations define relevant KPIs, at both the organizational and network levels.
Practical applicability
By collaborating with experts and testing the tools in practice, Van de Ven ensured that his method is both scientifically based and practically applicable. Organizations can now better manage their business models, improve decision-making and stimulate innovation. This research can provide valuable guidance for organizations facing performance management challenges, such as improving sustainability or balancing value for partners and users in a collaborative network.
The insights from this research contribute to broader societal benefits, such as more sustainable practices, better economic outcomes and improved services across sectors. This dissertation supports the development of more effective business models and strives for positive change in society.
