Book Launch for Handbook on Meaningful Human Control of AI systems

On October 1, 2024, Filippo Santoni de Sio (Professor of Ethics of Technology in the Philosophy & Ethics group) participated in the launch of his co-edited book, . Held at TU Delft, the event brought together experts from academia and practice to discuss both theoretical and practical approaches to implementing meaningful human control in AI systems.

The morning session opened with keynotes by leading academics Carles Sierra, Johannes Himmelreich, and Tanya Krupiy. It continued with a panel discussion on the book chaired by Santoni de Sio, featuring some of the book contributors.  After lunch, the event shifted focus to the practical challenges of meaningful human control. Prominent speakers, including David Abbink (Scientific Director of the Centre for Meaningful Human Control), Kim van Sparrentak (European Parliament), and others, discussed how to translate research into actionable strategies for real-world AI applications.

Launch of the Centre for Meaningful Human Control

The day culminated in the official launch of the TU Delft Centre for Meaningful Human Control. The Centre aims to be a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together researchers and practitioners to design and assess AI systems under meaningful human control. Its mission is to promote responsible AI systems that prioritize safety and accountability through multidisciplinary research. Before joining ¹û¶³´«Ã½ in September 2024, Santoni de Sio was an Associate Professor at TU Delft, where he played an influential role in research on meaningful human control. He will continue his involvement with the TU Delft meaningful human control research community as a member of the Research Team at the new Centre.
