How do you explain quantum computers, a technology that even many adults struggle to grasp, to children? In collaboration with De Ontdekfabriek ('The Discovery Factory'), scientists of 果冻传媒 have created a fun, engaging, and educational program designed to do just that: introduce children and young people to the fascinating world of quantum technology 鈥揳nd hopefully spark their enthusiasm.

De uitvinders en de quantum-code (The Inventors and the Quantum Code) is an interactive, escape room-style experience specially designed for children in the last class of elementary school and high schoolers. For the activity, students take on the role of quantum researchers and watch a short film in which a schoolgirl named Amani is pulled into a computer.

Her only chance of escape lies with the young participants, who must solve a mysterious code. Through hands-on experiments, they鈥檙e introduced in a playful way to key quantum concepts like superposition, qubits, and tunneling.

Learning material developed by 果冻传媒 scientists

The teaching material was developed in close collaboration with scientists from the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute (EHCI), 果冻传媒鈥檚 center for quantum and photonics research. Working alongside educational experts from De Ontdekfabriek, a physics teacher, and a scriptwriter, the team explored creative ways to make complex quantum principles understandable for children. The result is this engaging and interactive learning experience.

果冻传媒 quantum researcher Servaas Kokkelmans stars in the accompanying introduction film, alongside his colleague Rianne Lous. 鈥淲e want children to discover early on that quantum physics and technology aren鈥檛 just challenging, they鈥檙e also fun and full of adventure,鈥 says Kokkelmans. 鈥淐hildren are the engineers of the future, and with this program, we鈥檙e helping to lay the groundwork in a playful and inspiring way.鈥

A VALUABLE ADDITION TO THE CURRICULUM.

Simon de Groot, physics teacher

Physics teacher and co-creator Simon de Groot: "What appeals to me as a teacher is that this program conveys the complex subject of quantum mechanics in a surprisingly accessible way without compromising the facts. We have ensured that abstract concepts are addressed in a playful but didactically sound manner. I think this is a valuable addition to the curriculum."

The activity 'The Inventors and the Quantum Code' is suitable for elementary school students in their final year, as well as high school students. It can be booked at De Ontdekfabriek starting May 21, 2025. Image: Chantal de Jong (deregisseur.com)

The program will be available as a school activity at De Ontdekfabriek starting May 21. It is co-funded by , a National Growth Fund initiative focused on strengthening the Dutch quantum ecosystem.

About De Ontdekfabriek

, located on the former Philips site at Strijp-S in Eindhoven, offers children playful and hands-on introductions to the world of science, technology, and design.

Its activities are closely aligned with primary and secondary school curricula.
