Sjoerd (Georges) Romme of the ITEM group, was honored with the Edith Penrose Award for Trailblazing Researchers at the EURAM 2025 conference in Florence. This prestigious award recognizes his groundbreaking contributions in introducing and developing Design Science (DS) in the field of management research.

Design as Science

Romme鈥檚 influential article 鈥淢aking a difference: Organization as design鈥� (Organization Science, 2003) introduced the DS perspective to a field that traditionally emphasizes the independent observer role of scholars. His work advocates for a pragmatic approach in which solutions are seen as designed artifacts, guided by design principles.

Global Impact

Over the past two decades, Romme鈥檚 work has sparked a global shift in thinking within management research. His ideas have been embraced by leading journals such as Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice and Technovation, both of which have appointed editors dedicated to DS submissions.

In addition to his publications, Romme has applied Design Science in diverse domains such as deep-tech entrepreneurship, innovation ecosystems, and organizational democracy. He has also worked closely with PhD candidates and junior researchers, helping to shape the next generation of DS scholars.
