Institute for Complex Molecular Systems

Research

Our Science

At ICMS we investigate how complex molecular interactions lead to function. This knowledge is applied to create a next generation of soft materials and to provide engineering solutions for life sciences. Since our founding in 2008, ICMS has played a pivotal role in transforming research funding into tangible impact, leading to 31 start-ups.

We have organized our activities in three research domains.

Domain

Molecules attain their function by mutual interactions. Since this interaction landscape is extremely large, we need a multidisciplinary approach to understand how to control this process. In this research domain we combine theory and modelling to get a grip on complexity.

This domain is supported by the  growth fund, and the  gravitation program.

Domain

In this research domain we apply the design rules of complex molecular systems to the construction of soft materials with interactive features. We follow an integrative  approach, covering the entire chain of knowledge, for the development of polymer materials with built-in dynamics.

This domain is supported by the gravitation program.

Domain

We have an increasing molecular understanding of how living systems function. This allows us to engineer molecular solutions to monitor, modulate and restore biological processes. In this research domain we develop highly sensitive diagnostic tools for the detection of bioactive compounds.

This domain is supported by growth fund, the gravitation program, and the recently-approved  summit program.
