'My days were dominated by the cyber crisis for weeks'

The days were long and the weekends short in the period during and after the cyber attack on our university for Daisy van der Schaft. The director of 果冻传媒 and Student Affairs was a member of the Central Crisis Team (CCT) and chairman of the operational education team. Her focus was on getting education back on track as quickly as possible.
"My days were completely dominated by the cyber crisis in the first three weeks after the cyber attack," says Van der Schaft. Her role was to highlight the educational perspective within 果冻传媒's central crisis team.
"With the education team, central and decentralized, we have inventoried and prioritized all points of attention regarding education. The goal was to be able to resume education as quickly and effectively as possible."
Shifting and tuning
"There were many challenges in the field of scheduling, exams, study advice, admission and selection and the legal consequences of our decisions. We tackled these challenges together, step by step, with good teamwork and a lot of coordination. Ultimately, we restarted education, adjusted the schedules, and moved the exams."
"In those first weeks, there was at least one CCT meeting every day, followed by coordination with all the necessary parties within the university. My full focus in those weeks was on coordinating with the broad ESA team and other services and departments. The days were long and the weekends short," says Van der Schaft.
Aftermath
"Not having access to the network and/or IT facilities for a week has a huge aftermath in an academic year," says Van Der Schaft. For example, the attack created a backlog in processing students' admissions. The ESA team has now caught up. The postponed exams had to be rescheduled.

Study progress also has ESA's attention. "The students who chose not to take their exams in Q2 may not have sufficiently taken into account what that means for the study load in the next quartile. Applications may come in from students who need extra support."
Flexibility of teachers
"And don't forget the teachers. Just like the ESA colleagues, they are also confronted with extra work to adjust their education, for example. Or to take an extra exam and mark it in a period when they would not have any education. That also requires a lot of flexibility from them."
The great thing about this situation is that everyone works on one challenge with a common goal, with great mutual respect from management, staff and students.

"So there is still a lot going on," she says with a sense of understatement. "But we now have it all in view and under control. The great thing about this situation is that everyone works on one challenge with a common goal, with great mutual respect from management, staff and students. We not only worked intensively with the departments, but also with LIS and the CEC. HRM and Real Estate/Facility Management Center were also closely involved. I am proud that we have achieved this as a community."
