EcoSystem Investigation aims to support nature-related organisations in reconnecting people to nature by spreading their knowledge and environmental awareness in order to foster an intrinsic motivation for sustainable behaviour.

Humanity lacks motivation for sustainable behaviour and is disconnected from nature, especially the younger generations. Meanwhile, the participants and members of nature-related organisations are aging, resulting in reduced opportunities for environmental education, which is only reaching a limited audience. How can we support these organisations to reach younger generations and make their environmentally educational experience more memorable and shareable?

EcoSystem Investigation (ESI) is a modular and portable interactive toolkit for guides to teach participants about ecosystems based on what traces they find. The method draws parallels with CSI (crime scene investigation) by treating traces as evidence of a murder mystery, which resembles escape rooms (targeted at younger audiences): What happened? Who can be suspects? Who are witnesses? By letting participants explore and take pictures of evidence and placing that in categories, the ecosystem relations become evident. The group learns from the guide and one another and becomes aware of their human role in the ecosystem.
