AuditoriumGood Vibrations - Innovating with Sound and Light to support a Healthcare System Under Pressure
Prof.dr.ir. Richard G.P. Lopata was appointed full-time professor of Photoacoustics & Ultrasound Imaging at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (¹û¶³´«Ã½) on October 1, 2024. He will deliver his inaugural lecture on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
The title of the lecture
Good Vibrations - Innovating with Sound and Light to support a Healthcare System Under Pressure
About the lecture
In the ever-pressured healthcare environment, new diagnostic technologies are key for early detection, precise monitoring, and effective treatment of diseases, reducing healthcare costs and improving patient outcomes. After many years, ultrasound imaging still stands out due to its safety, cost-effectiveness, and versatility, providing real-time imaging capabilities at the patient’s bedside. However, its use is hampered by a limited field-of-view and poor tissue contrast. In this lecture, Lopata will present his vision on the future of echography and how to tackle its current limitations with new imaging concepts that enable high-fidelity imaging. By incorporating light, photoacoustic imaging provides optical tissue contrast, greatly boosting diagnostic abilities. Lopata will demonstrate how diagnostic value can be further improved by introducing functional imaging techniques and modelbased analysis of imaging data, providing biomarkers beyond ‘just’ anatomy with the potential to predict disease progression. His multidisciplinary approach integrates engineering, physics, and medical sciences, providing clinicians with cutting-edge imaging technology. This inaugural lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of these advancements and their potential impact on healthcare.
