Tendon graft healing after reconstruction of the torn anterior cruciate ligament undergoes a process called ligamentization. Unfortunately, this process results in declining mechanical properties, which can result in graft rupture and knee laxity. The underlying mechanism is believed to relate to a poorly understood change in tissue organization, i.e. a transformation from highly anisotropic to isotropic. In collaboration with dr. Janssen from the MMC Hospital, we aim to better understand this process and develop strategies to minimize this transition.
