Electromechanics and Power Electronics

We carry out fundamental research on the energy conversion theory, methods, and systems, that serve as enabling technologies for future developments in electromechanics, power electronics and motion systems.

We want to remain the academic frontrunner in sustainable energy conversion systems in the Netherlands

Electromechanical technologies and devices of all sizes are part of all areas of society. These devices need to meet increasingly stringent demands for precision, efficiency and sustainability. The Electromechanics and Power Electronics group researches the energy conversion theory, methods and technology needed to build electromechanical devices that live up to that challenge.
To do this, we closely collaborate with national and international industrial and academical partners. Together, we create prototypes at high technology readiness level (TRL) and work on many projects co-funded by industry. We work on widely disseminating our results, so partners in our extensive national, European and world-wide network can apply them in their designs.

Mission

We perform fundamental and application-oriented research in electromechanical and electrical energy conversion.

Application areas: high-tech systems (semicon, robotics, medical) and sustainable energy (mobility, transport, smart grids)

Strong interconnection with industry: high TRL prototypes, many industrially co-funded projects, excellent dissemination, extensive national, European and world-wide network

Laboratory: 680 m2 , new research facilities, new e-conversion lab opened, new medium-voltage Eindhoven Grid lab. (with CS and EES)

Electromechanics Lab

The Electromechanics lab conducts research focused on high-performant electromagnetic actuation principles and systems – and the physical modeling thereof – for automotive, high-precision, medical and robotics applications. The research activities explore novel proof-of-concepts for multi-axis, multifunctional, rotational and translational actuation methods that push the performance envelop of actuation systems beyond the state-of-art in terms of volumetric footprint, power efficiency, (raw) material usage and reliability.

Accomplished Projects

The research in the EPE group has strongly grown in the past years because of the industrial demands for innovative and energy-saving conversion systems. The research has been greatly supported by the national and international programs, such as IOP-EMVT, Point-One, FP7 and by direct industrial grants.

The research in the group is carried out in four interlinked directions: Sustainable Society, High Precision, Automotive and Medical.

The Electromechanics and Power Electronics group is providing lectures, practical training, internal and industrial traineeships, and graduation projects in both the Bachelor and the Master of the Electrical Engineering department.

For advice on traineeships, graduation projects and more, Elena Lomonova has an almost weekly walk-in for students on Thursdays from 6PM-7PM at Flux 2.111. The exact day is announced every Monday morning at the door of Flux 2.111. Because of the limited time of Professor Lomonova, please fill in  form and send it to the secretary of the EPE-group at least one day before the reservation.
